The Abortion Monologues is a grassroots theatre project
providing a platform for people from all walks of life
to speak their truths about abortion and reproductive freedoms.
As Lynn opened the bulky envelope from Berea College, her heart felt heavy.
She had worked for over a month on her application hoping to win a coveted full scholarship. Without it, she knew she’d never be able to afford college. But as she read the acceptance letter, her mind shifted away from celebration and toward concern for her future. Lynn discovered that she was pregnant just one day before receiving the letter. She considered all of her options and decided that abortion was right for her.
Lynn has told her story to a few friends, but she remains fearful of reaching out to others. The Abortion Monologues of Lexington is a response to intense political pressure to spread misinformation about abortion and silence those who wish to tell their stories. It is more than a subversive grassroots theatre project; we’re a group of local storytellers and volunteers who understand that advocacy can take infinite forms. We’re dedicated to lifting the voices of those who desire to be heard. Our project is for folks like Lynn who want a chance to speak their truths but need the support of a community to make it happen.
We celebrate all identities and abilities; there’s a seat at the table for anyone who’s interested in sharing their story or lending their skills to foster tangible change right here in Kentucky.
Reproductive rights are constantly under attack, and every minute counts in the fight to preserve safe, legal, and accessible care. Abortion remains one of the most scrutinized political issues nationwide. As lawmakers continually attempt to restrict abortion access, we must remain steadfast in our pursuit of reproductive justice for all Kentuckians and beyond. Collective action is inherently radical, and we invite you to become a part of our growing social arts movement in the Bluegrass.
