Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What exactly is The Abortion Monologues?

A: The Abortion Monologues is a live theater project based on the popular Vagina Monologues. Storytellers and volunteers work with each other to write monologues about their experiences with abortion and then present them in a theatrical format to a local audience. These stories are intended to be true stories, but they can be creative adaptations if necessary to maintain anonymity.

Q: I have a story I want to share, but I don’t want to be on stage. What can I do?

A: We have volunteer actors willing to present your story for you. If this is something you want to pursue, we’ll help you work with an actor to make sure we maintain the integrity of your story. You will be respected and honored throughout the process.

Q: I’m not sure if my story “counts” for the show. What should I do?

A: Reach out and ask! We’re interested in creative storytelling. If you believe it is abortion-related, it probably is.

Q: Will I be paid for my participation as a storyteller or a volunteer?

A: Everyone who works for the show is an unpaid volunteer. There is no promise of compensation expressed or implied, but there will probably be some awesome perks!

Q: I am a trans person/person of color/LGBTQ person/member of a marginalized group. Am I welcome in this space to tell my abortion story?

A: Absolutely! We understand it is sometimes hard to take visible action as a member of any marginalized group. It can feel intimidating to enter new space where folks might not be familiar with your struggle. It’s even harder when our society constantly espouses heteronormativity, sexism, ableism, racism, classism, and white feminist ideals. However, your identity and your story will be honored, respected, and celebrated. You will never be asked to do unnecessary emotional labor. Please join us!

Q: I don’t have a story, but I want to help! Do you have volunteer positions?

A: Of course! If you have a skill, we probably have a need for it. Graphic designers, webmasters, fundraisers, lawyers, actors, techies, and screen printers are especially needed. We also need day-of-production volunteers to set-up/tear-down and sell raffle tickets.

Q: I want to make a donation of money, goods, or services. How will my donation be used? Will I be recognized for my donation?

A: It depends on the nature of the donation. If you’re donating something to be used as technical support to the show (ex: screen printing services), it will be used expressly for show support and not resold for profit. If you’re donating something to be included in a fundraiser/raffle/silent auction (ex: gift certificate), it will be used to raise funds that will go directly to financial support and the cost of materials of the show. You will be recognized as a supporter in our program and on stage during the show. Conversely, we welcome anonymous donations as we realize it can be necessary to separate yourself or your business from this particular interest.

Q: Are donations tax deductible?

A: Unfortunately, no. However, you will be recognized as a supporter in our program and on stage during the show. There’s no greater reward than supporting local activism, am I right?
